Testing your incident response before you need it

A tabletop exercise is the cheapest way to find the gaps in your plan — long before an attacker does.

By Nick Saharan · Incident Response Specialist

The worst time to read your incident-response plan for the first time is during an incident. Yet that is exactly when most teams discover the phone tree is out of date and nobody knows who can authorise a shutdown.

A tabletop exercise fixes this for the price of an afternoon. You gather the people who would actually respond, walk through a realistic scenario, and watch where the plan breaks.

Do it twice a year, rotate the scenarios, and invite the operations team. The muscle memory you build is worth more than any document.
