Securing the cold chain against ransomware
Why refrigeration and logistics systems are a prime target — and the controls that keep produce moving when attackers strike.

Cold-chain operations sit at the intersection of operational technology and razor-thin margins. A few hours of downtime can spoil an entire shipment, which is exactly why ransomware crews have learned to target them.
The pressure to pay is highest where every minute has a temperature attached. Attackers know that a frozen-goods distributor cannot simply wait out an incident the way an office network can.
The defensive playbook starts with segmentation: keeping the systems that control refrigeration away from the general IT network so a phished laptop cannot reach a compressor. Offline, tested backups come next, followed by an incident plan that names who calls whom at 3am.
None of this is exotic. It is the same hygiene the rest of the industry preaches — applied to equipment most security teams have never been asked to think about.
